5 Tips to Create High-Performance Teams
Every High Performance Leaders aims to lead an effective team. Actually numerous High Performance leaders contribute a ton of time and energy obsessing about how to make the ideal elite group that optimizes their potential, performance and impact and thus reaches their goals and create consistent results.
However the reality shows a different picture. A significant number of the leaders use a strategy that is intended to improve their team’s performance, but fail to do so. Here are 5 tips to create High Performance Teams and how to lead them.
1. Get The Right Mix of People
Numerous leaders make groups that need more variety, diversity and have the wrong size. It’s human instinct to enlist individuals simply like us, however that simply makes a group of clones. This doesn’t help the group master the various ranges of abilities that are out there. Additionally when the group is too big it can get hard to assemble confiding involved with your team members. A lot of the time sub-groups emerge and so called “team-gaps” are created.
Groups need to have the right mix of people, cultures, genders, behaviors and skillsets. A group thrives when each colleague sees the added value of the quality each team member bring to the table and every single member is sure about the role they have. A good example is a sports team, like I had when I was a top Sport Athlete playing in for the National Field Hockey Team. We all valued each other’s different qualities on the field, we trusted one another the get the job done together and that we’d had each other’s back, we were all very different as an individual, but as we fought for the same goal (becoming World Champion), the team performance was high. Trust, dedication, embracing differences and having one well mapped out plan & set of goals made us a High Performing Team.
2. Make The Right Rules of Engagement For The Team
One of the biggest causes why I see teams fail to be High Performing is the lack of a clear set of rules or guidelines for the team. The best thing to do is to let the team itself create this set of rules and guidelines, before you even start! How do we deal with unwanted situations? How do we interact with each other? What choices to make when the going gets tough? Which scenario’s to choose? How do we talk to one another?
Groups or teams that created the right set of rules & guidelines end up being more agile, show more proactive behavior, are way more effective in their communication, reaching their goals and overall performance.
3. Trust and Vulnerability
As I mentioned above trust is one of the main pillars a High Performance Team is based on. Trust in your role and abilities. Trust in each other. Trust in having each other’s back when needed. Trust that you are valued for the qualities you bring to the table, despite the fact you might be different from the others. Trust in the process. Trust in open & honest conversations or feedback. But also trust in you as their leader. High Performance Leaders walk their talk and are to be trusted in any aspect of the word. They lead when needed, give autonomy whenever possible and show in a vulnerable way that they are human and that they value the human behind the task given or role assigned.
4. Let it flow
Many leaders want to take control and keep control over the group in a way too demanding and dominant manner. Some of the indicators for this unhealthy controlling behavior is organizing too many meetings and overanalyzing / micro-management. Clear instructions, rules, guidelines and goals, don’t need many meetings! Actually too many meeting not only absorbs precious productive time of your team members, it also kills their sense of creativity, problem solving, pro-active behavior and autonomous thinking. It will make them less effective and efficient. High Performance Leaders let it flow. They oversee the process, they adjust the course when needed and keep the end goal in sight.
5. Encourage feedback and continuous learning
High Performance Leaders encourage feedback and continuous learning within their teams. This kind of success mindset is crucial for creating a high performing team. Feedback challenges their creativity, resilience and innovation. Continuous learning not only stimulates their brains, but will keep your team on top of their game and ahead of the competition.
Implementing all five of the above tips as a High Performance Leader, will definitely maximize your teams’ potential, performance and impact!
